A call to service

Service is at the very heart of the Christian life. In a world where many pursue recognition, comfort, and status, Jesus turns the pattern upside down. He reminds us that greatness in His Kingdom is not defined by position or power, but by the posture of the heart — a heart willing to serve.

Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

When Jesus said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,” He revealed the essence of His mission and gave us the model for ours. He did not demand honor, yet He was the King of Glory. He did not seek comfort, yet He carried the weight of humanity’s pain. Every act of service He performed , the washing His disciples’ feet, healing the sick, feeding the hungry, pointed to a greater truth: service is love in action.

Romans 12:7 If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well.

Paul echoes this truth, encouraging believers to serve and teach well. Whatever our gifts may be: teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, or showing kindness, we are called to use them diligently, not half-heartedly. True service requires both humility and excellence.

Serving well means showing up with a pure heart, doing what God has entrusted to you with joy and faithfulness. It means giving your best, even when no one is watching, because your service is ultimately to the Lord.

When you serve, you reflect Christ. And when you serve well, you glorify Him. Look for an opportunity to serve someone this week — at home, at work, or in your community. Do it not for recognition, but out of love for God. Ask yourself: “How can I make Christ visible through my service today?”
