Scripture Reading: Judges 6:17
“Gideon replied, ‘If you are truly going to help me, show me a sign to prove that it is really the LORD speaking to me.’”
God had already called Gideon. He had promised to be with him. Yet Gideon still struggled to believe.
His response was honest:
“Show me a sign.”
Gideon’s faith had not yet matured. He wanted proof before he was willing to move forward.
Many of us can relate.
We pray, “Lord, if this is really You, give me a sign.”
Sometimes we hesitate to obey because we want absolute certainty before taking the first step of faith.
Throughout Scripture, we see that God is patient with people whose faith is still growing. Gideon was not rejected because of his weakness. Instead, God graciously met him where he was.
The disciple Thomas had a similar struggle. When the other disciples told him that Jesus had risen from the dead, he refused to believe until he saw the evidence for himself.
Jesus lovingly appeared to Thomas and invited him to see and touch His wounds. Then He said:
“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” — John 20:29
God may give confirmation in different ways, but His desire is that our faith would ultimately rest in His Word rather than in signs alone.
The Apostle Paul reminds us that “we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). As we grow in our relationship with God, we learn to trust His promises even when we cannot see the whole picture.
In Gideon’s story, God answered his request. Fire came from the rock and consumed the offering. The angel of the Lord then departed, and Gideon knew with certainty that God had spoken to him (Judges 6:21–22).
The sign strengthened Gideon’s faith, but it was never meant to replace a life of trusting God.
There are seasons when God gives remarkable confirmations, and there are seasons when He simply says, “Trust Me.” In both cases, He is inviting us to grow in faith.
If you are waiting for a sign today, don’t miss the greatest assurance you already have: God’s unchanging Word. His promises remain true whether or not you see immediate evidence.
Faith does not mean having every question answered. It means choosing to trust the One who has already proven Himself faithful.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your patience when my faith is weak. Help me to trust Your Word more than my fears and to obey You even when I cannot see every step ahead. Strengthen my faith day by day so that I may walk confidently in Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
